We stock and install Lennox-compatible capacitor replacements across Austin, and the installed cost typically runs $180 to $340 depending on whether your system takes a single or dual-run capacitor. Most jobs are done same day since our trucks carry a range of microfarad ratings and voltage specs. The usual story we hear: your AC was running fine yesterday, but today the compressor hums for five seconds, clicks off, and the fan never joins it. That’s the capacitor, in most cases, and it’s one of the most common failures we see in Austin’s heat, especially on Lennox units running hard from May through October.
Which Lennox Models This Applies To
Almost every Lennox condenser made in the last 25 years uses a run capacitor, including the XC13, XC14, XC16, XC20, XC21, Elite series, Merit series, and Signature series. The trick is matching the exact spec to the right unit, and this is where we see plenty of mismatched parts in Austin. A capacitor is rated by microfarads (µF) and voltage, and Lennox specs are printed clearly on the side of the old part, something like “45/5 µF, 440 VAC.” If someone installs a 35 µF where a 45 belongs, the compressor draws higher amperage, overheats windings, and shortens the motor’s life. We carry OEM Lennox-spec capacitors and quality aftermarket equivalents (made by the same manufacturers that supply the OEM channel). For units still under a Lennox parts warranty, OEM is worth it. For an older unit out of warranty, a quality dual-run aftermarket capacitor often saves real money and performs identically. Cold Harbour Heating and Air Austin is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Lennox, but our technicians are trained on Lennox systems along with Carrier and Trane, and we match parts strictly by the unit’s nameplate specs.

Signs Your Lennox Capacitor Replacement Is Failing
- Compressor hums, then clicks off. A weak capacitor can’t deliver the starting torque the compressor needs, so the thermal overload trips after a few seconds. This is the most common failure pattern we see in Austin, usually on the hottest afternoon of the year.
- Outdoor fan won’t spin or spins slowly. Dual-run capacitors control both the compressor and the fan motor. When the fan half of the capacitor fails, the fan sits still while the compressor strains, and head pressure climbs fast.
- You need to “kick-start” the fan with a stick. Owner’s trick: give the fan blade a push and it runs. That means the capacitor isn’t providing the phase shift to start the motor on its own. This isn’t a fix, it’s a sign the capacitor is gone.
- AC trips the breaker intermittently. A failing capacitor makes the compressor draw more current than the circuit expects. In older Austin homes with aging panels, a marginal capacitor will push the breaker past its limit.
- Visible bulging, splitting, or oil residue on the capacitor itself. Austin’s heat makes capacitors swell; once the metal top rounds upward or splits, the dielectric has broken down and the part is dead.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Austin, expect to pay $180 to $340 for a Lennox-compatible capacitor replacement, parts and labor included. A single-run capacitor (fan only or compressor only) falls on the lower end, while a dual-run capacitor on a higher-end Lennox unit lands on the upper end, especially if it’s a 440 VAC spec in a larger µF rating. The price we hand you before work starts already includes the part, the installation, a full contactor and wiring inspection, and a test cycle to confirm the system starts cleanly. Every replacement carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the new capacitor fails within a year, we come back and replace it at no charge, and that guarantee is written on your invoice, not just spoken. We don’t charge overtime for evening or weekend calls in Austin, because capacitors fail when it’s 103°F, not when it’s convenient.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check two things without opening the panel: listen for the hum-click pattern we described, and look through the condenser grille for the telltale bulge. That’s the safe limit. What you shouldn’t do is remove the service panel and start testing a capacitor yourself. A capacitor stores voltage even after the power is off, and a charged 440 VAC capacitor can deliver a serious shock. Every year, a few homeowners in Austin end up in an emergency room trying to save $200 – please don’t be one of them. We arrive with the part matched to your Lennox unit’s nameplate, install it with the system isolated, test the full start cycle, and hand you a written price before any tools come out. If your Lennox is down today, call (361) 204-1605 and a real person answers.
FAQs
A well-matched Lennox capacitor usually lasts 5 to 10 years, but in Austin’s heat, 5 to 7 years is the realistic window. Heat is the capacitor’s enemy: sustained ambient temperatures above 100°F break down the insulating dielectric inside the can, and a condenser running in direct Texas sun shortens the life even further. If your capacitor is over 6 years old and your AC is acting up, there’s a good chance it’s the culprit. Call (361) 204-1605 and we’ll test it on site, usually same day.
No. A capacitor is a sealed, non-serviceable component, and there is no reliable way to repair one once the dielectric has failed. The fix is a replacement with a part that matches the microfarad and voltage rating printed on the old unit. We don’t patch capacitors, and you shouldn’t trust anyone who says they can – the cost of a new part in Austin is a fraction of what a failed compressor costs later.
Most capacitor replacements take 45 to 90 minutes from arrival to a running system. That includes isolating power, discharging the old capacitor safely, confirming the new part’s rating against the unit’s nameplate, installing it, and running a full start and run test. If we find burned wiring or a pitted contactor during the inspection, we’ll quote that separately before any extra work is done.
Yes. Our Austin trucks carry a full range of single and dual-run capacitors in the most common Lennox ratings, from 5 µF fan capacitors to 80 µF dual-run units, in both 370 and 440 VAC. If your Lennox takes an unusual spec, we can usually source it the same day from our local suppliers around Austin. Call (361) 204-1605, tell us your unit’s model number, and we’ll confirm the part is on hand before we head your way.
