Goodman Heat Pump Service: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Goodman heat pump service in Austin typically runs $150 – $650 installed, depending on which part failed and how far into the system the technician has to go. We stock the most common Goodman heat pump parts on our trucks, so a compressor capacitor swap or a failed defrost sensor usually happens same-day here in Austin. If you’re reading this, chances are your Goodman heat pump started blowing warm in cooling mode, or it’s short-cycling, or it’s making a noise you haven’t heard before. You want to know what broke, what it costs, and whether you’re getting a real fix or a band-aid. That’s a fair set of questions.

Which Goodman Models This Applies To

We service the full Goodman heat pump lineup you’ll find in Austin homes: the GSZ and GSZB series, the GSZC communicating models, and the entry-level GPH and GSX series that went into a lot of Texas tract housing between 2006 and 2018. If your outdoor unit has a Goodman data plate on the corner, we can match it. The model number is printed right there on that plate, usually a string like GSZ140361 or GSZC160481. Take a photo of it before you call. It saves a trip because Goodman uses different refrigerant blends, capacitor ratings, and defrost board wiring across series, and the wrong board wired into a communicating GSZC will throw error codes until the end of time. One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Goodman revised their defrost control boards around 2014, and the old PCBDM101 is not a drop-in for the newer PCBDM133S, even on the same nominal model. We carry both on the truck and verify by part number, not by memory.

On parts, you’ll hear “OEM” thrown around. For Goodman, OEM means genuine Goodman-Daikin sourced components. They cost 15% to 40% more than aftermarket equivalents. For boards, defrost sensors, and reversing valves, we recommend OEM on Goodman because the tolerances are tighter than the gray-market copies. For capacitors, contactors, and fan motors, a quality aftermarket part like Titan HD or Mars is just as good and often lasts longer in Austin heat. We’ll tell you which way we’d go and price both before a single tool comes out. Cold Harbour Heating and Air Austin is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Goodman or Daikin. We work on whatever is already on your slab.

Signs Your Goodman Heat Pump Service Is Failing

  • Air is blowing, but it’s not cold (or not hot). Most common culprit on Goodman units in Austin is a failed run capacitor. The compressor won’t start without it, so the air handler blows house-temperature air. A capacitor replacement is usually under $200 installed.
  • The outdoor unit turns on, runs a few minutes, then shuts off. On a heat pump this is often the defrost thermostat or the high-pressure switch doing its job because the coil is clogged with cottonwood or oak pollen. If the coil is blocked, the system is protecting itself.
  • The outdoor unit runs in cooling mode but freezes up overnight. That’s either low refrigerant (a leak somewhere) or a failing defrost board not cycling correctly. Goodman defrost boards fail more often than the compressors do, and the board is a 30-to-45-minute fix.
  • You hear a loud hum, then a click, then nothing from the outdoor unit. That’s a contactor or capacitor failing under load. The click is the contactor pulling in, and the hum is the compressor trying to start. The fix is on our truck right now.
  • The system runs constantly and your Austin Electric bill looks wrong. A stuck reversing valve or a failed outdoor fan motor makes the heat pump run far longer than it should. You’ll notice the bill before you notice the symptom. Both are repairable, and a reversing valve job is the pricier end of heat pump work, usually $450 – $650 parts and labor.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest spread for Goodman heat pump service in Austin. What you pay depends on the part, not on the mood of the technician.

  • Dual run capacitor: $150 – $220 installed
  • Contactor: $160 – $240 installed
  • Defrost control board (OEM): $280 – $420 installed
  • Outdoor fan motor: $320 – $480 installed
  • Reversing valve (with refrigerant recovery and recharge): $450 – $650 installed
  • Compressor (new, with filter drier and full recharge): $1,400+, at which point we will have a straight conversation about whether a new system makes more sense

Every one of those prices includes the part, the labor, and the written price handed to you before we start. That’s the Kingswell Way, and it’s the way we’ve operated since 2003. You’ll also get our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the repair fails within a year, we come back and correct it at no charge. Not a verbal guarantee. On paper, signed, before the technician leaves your driveway.

DIY or Call Us?

Let’s be direct: heat pump electrical work is not a YouTube project. The capacitor in your Goodman outdoor unit stores enough charge to stop your heart even with the breaker off, and the refrigerant lines operate at several hundred PSI. That’s not a scare tactic; it’s the same caution any honest HVAC technician would give you. What you can safely do: check your air filter (a clogged one mimics half the symptoms above), confirm the breaker is on and not half-tripped, and confirm the thermostat is set correctly. After that, the smart move is to call. My name is Victor Mancini, and I’ve been working on systems long enough to know the difference between a five-minute check and a two-hour repair. One visit, one diagnosis, one fix – that is the only way this works. Call (361) 204-1605 and a live person answers, day or night.
